BIOGRAPHY
Nicole Kidman was the oldest of two children born to Anthony and Janelle Kidman. Her father was a biochemist, clinical psychologist, author, and activist, and her mother was a nurse, educator, and activist. Kidman was born in Hawaii, and her family lived briefly in Washington, D.C. However, she was raised in Longueville, a suburb of Sydney, Australia. As children she and her sister passed out political leaflets for their parents and were expected to debate at least one current event each night at dinner. She began studying ballet at the age of three, and trained in dance, drama, and mime throughout her childhood. She was educated as a teen at the St. Martin's Youth Theatre, the Australian Theater for Young People, and the Philip Street Theatre in Australia. When she was in high school, her mother was diagnosed with breast cancer. Kidman dropped out of school to help her and to pursue acting. Her mother recovered, but Kidman never returned to school. One of her first acting projects was in the holiday movie BUSH CHRISTMAS which still airs in Australia each year. She was already a popular star in Australia when she made her film debut in America with the movie DEAD CALM.
Kidman became famous quickly in America, but it was not her acting that first thrust her into the limelight. She and Tom Cruise were married after filming DAYS OF THUNDER together, and it was this alliance that made her name known. She proved her star stature with the film TO DIE FOR for which she won a Golden Globe for Best Actress. She and Cruise have acted together in two other films, FAR AND AWAY and EYES WIDE SHUT. They are protective of their marriage and have twice sued tabloid publications for libelous statements. Both times they received large monetary settlements and a published retraction. The donated the money to charity. They have homes in Los Angeles, New York, Colorado, and Australia.
