Making the decision of placing a loved one in a nursing home facility is a difficult one. But, if you have a loved one that is terminally ill and needs care that yourself and other family members can not give, it is the best decision. Now comes the hard part of choosing one: there are many nursing homes that are very reputable and care about the patients they have. But there are many that are very questionable in business ethics and the care of your loved one.

When all parties have made the decision that a nursing home facility is needed, do not exclude the opinions of the person that will be living in the nursing home. If this decision was made by all family members but the person that is going in, this will be difficult on them as well as the facility you choose. When choosing a nursing home, if the loved one that will be living there can make some of their own judgments it is best to include them in the process of determining which nursing home they will be in. This will make the transition even easier because they will be happy.

When choosing a nursing home remember that nursing homes with a good nurse-patient ratio are usually non-profit nursing homes: they also usually have a waiting list. If a non-profit is not available, then look for location, it is best to find a nursing home that is convenient for all family members. This way there will no trouble for transportation for family visits.

There are many signs that you should look for to make sure your loved one will be in the best possible hands. Look for nursing homes that have a bright, cheery environment instead of like a hospital setting. Make sure the nursing home is affiliated with a hospital and that they staff only professionals. While attending the nursing homes, look at the other patients. If they are well attended this will tell you a lot about the nursing home. Talk to the residents there, ask them if they have any complaints: these will be a very valuable source of information.
