Note that this is a list of the game reserves in South Africa. Besides these game reserves there are a number of national parks and a vast number of private game lodges.
Giant's Castle Game Reserve
Situated in the majestic mountain range, the Drakensberg in the province of Kwazulu-Natal, South Africa. The area of over 30 000 hectares was proclaimed a game reservation in 1903.
It is home to many species of antelope, black-backed jackals, baboons and a varied bird life including lanner falcons and giant kingfishers. Also on view are a number of San (bushmen) paintings. Camps are available for those wishing to spend time in the reserve.
Hluhluwe Game Reserve
This reserve is also situated in Kwazulu-Natal.
It is rich in game and wildlife such as white and black rhinoceros, buffalo, elephant, giraffe, buck, zebra, cheetah, bush pig, crocodiles, hippopotamus, leopard and baboon can be found.
Krugersdorp Game Reserve
This is one of the smallest game reserves in South Africa - it can be found in the western parts of Gauteng, outside the town Krugersdorp. Many varied wildlife can be found in the 1 400 hectares - lion, buck, ostrich, giraffe and rhinoceros.
Mkuze Game Reserve
This reserve is in Kwazulu-Natal and the area of the reserve encompasses 30 500 hectares. It was proclaimed a reserve in 1912.
The wildlife included buck, rhino, giraffe, hippopotamus, bush pig, leopard, jackal, crocodiles and varied bird life. The reserve is also known for its botanical splendour.
Ndumu Game Reserve
This reserve is situated in Kwazulu-natal. It was proclaimed a reserve in 1910 and there is a wealth of wildlife to be found in the 10 000 hectare area.
Richards Bay Game Reserve
This reserve is situated in Kwazulu-natal and was proclaimed a reserve in 1935.
St Lucia Game Reserve
St Lucia is an area of lagoons, lakes and estuary system and can also be found in Kwazulu-Natal.
Umfolozi Game Reserve
Yet another game reserve in Kwazulu-Natal. It is named after the Mfolozi river - the word “mfolozi” means to zigzag. This is the oldest of the game reserves in South Africa - it was proclaimed a reserve as early as 1897.
Willem Pretorius Game Reserve
This reserve can be found in the Free State, a landlocked province in South Africa. It is home to antelope, including the well-known springbok and black wildebeest.
Other wildlife include zebra, rhino, rhino, birds and a number of smaller animals.
