The women who stroll the red carpet, present and even receive awards on Oscar night in Hollywood not only share a common interest in cinema, but also the same scent. The fragrance is “Laila,” a special formula designed specifically for allergy sufferers.
Geir Ness, a former actor and model, created the perfume for his mother, Laila, as a Mother's Day gift. Now it has become a favorite among environmentally-correct Hollywood celebrities simply because it is all natural. It has also been endorsed by the most powerful entity in the motion picture capital of the world.
Its popularity began to bloom when The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences began to receive concerns from allergy-sensitive presenters. In effect, personal selections of perfume were discouraged. The academy then designated “Laila” the official fragrance of the Oscars.
Ness, who is also allergy-sensitive, said he wanted to created a line of perfume and other scented products that could be enjoyed by the most-receptive of allergy sufferers. What better way to test his new product than in Los Angeles, a location where smog, pollen and pollution can be quite theatening to those with respiratory ailments.
Following a number of trial runs, Ness said he settled on a unique formula that derives from the oils of chosen wildflowers that grow in the mountains of his birthplace, Norway.
“Laila’s” big screen test came on Oscar night, 2000, when one sneeze, a single teary eye or a runny nose could have quickly sent Ness back to the drawing board. Oscar winner Hilary Swank (“Boys Don’t Cry”) had already purchased the perfume before discovering the academy had bought a huge quantity of it for its female presenters and winners.
Now Ness’ product has been embraced by the some of the most powerful allergy suffers in Beverly Hills. “[Actor] Kevin Costner buys it for his daughter,” said Ness.
Ness has since developed other products, including a bath and shower gel, natural deodorant, body cream and scented candles for the allergy sufferer. A 1.7-ounce bottle of “Laila Eau de Parfum” sells for $49 online. It can also be purchased at select high-end department stores.
