So, you want to buy a Poodle! First of all, read the overview of the characteristics and qualities of a Poodle. Remember that these are high maintenance dogs. Then, read over and think about the pros and cons of owning a Poodle. An informed pet owner is a good pet owner.

Here is a brief history on the breed, as well as an overview of the characteristics and qualities of the Poodle:

Poodles are thought to have originated in Germany. It is believed that they were originally used as water retrievers. The Poodle has appeared in many various parts of the ancient world. Poodles are represented on bas-reliefs dating back to the 1st century in southern Europe.

The poodle is extremely popular in France. Poodles have been popular in France since the beginning of the 19th century. The Poodle’s astuteness and adaptableness have made it a worldwide favorite of dog owners.

There are three varieties of Poodles. The Standard Poodle should be 15 in or more in height at the shoulder and should weigh 20 lb or more. The Miniature Poodle stands from 10 to 15 in high at the shoulder and weighs from 12 to 20 lb. The Toy Poodle is 10 in or less at the shoulder and weighs less than 12 lb. The standard variety is used in the country as a water retriever, as a watchdog, just recently as a sled dog, and as a pet. The Miniature and Toy varieties are used as pets and show dogs. They are sized appropriately to make good pets for city and apartment dwellers.

All three varieties of Poodle should have a fairly pointed skull. Poodles should possess a long, straight muzzle. Poodles should have dark, egg-shaped eyes. A Poodle’s ears should be set low and hang close to the head. Poodles should also have strong necks, deep chests, and straight forelegs with powerfully built hind legs. Poodles should carry their tails high.

A Poodle has a downy undercoat. Its topcoat should consist either of wiry, coiled hair, or long, smooth hair that hangs in cords. Poodles can be almost any solid color.

The coat of the poodle is generally combed and cut into one of two preferred styles. The tradition of grooming and combing Poodles is said to have started as a means of assisting Poodles in swimming. The two preferred styles are the Continental and the English saddle style.

Both styles dictate that each leg is cut, leaving only a ring of hair near the foot. In both styles, the hair of the face and tail are also cut. A pom-pom of hair at the end of the tail or top of the head may be left. In the Continental style, the hindquarters of the dog are shaved down to the skin. Decorations of hair are usually left on the hips and hocks. In the English saddle style, the hair of the hindquarters is cut to leave a cover of short hair.

These are some of the pros of owning a Poodle:

The poodle is highly intelligent. Poodles should receive obedience training, however.

The poodle does not need an excessive amount of exercise, but should have a backyard to play in or at least be walked daily.

Poodles shed very little.

Here are a few of the cons of owning a Poodle:

Be ready to groom your poodle's coat every six to eight weeks.

Be ready to shampoo your Poodle regularly.

Be ready to trim your Poodle’s nails every two to three weeks.

You will have to check your Poodle's ears regularly for mites.

Poodles are predisposed to particular health conditions.

These include cataracts, progressive retinal atrophy, allergies, skin problems, hip dysplasia and Von Willebrand's disease.
