As a parent you feel that it’s time to start potty training your child. But your wondering how do you know if your child is ready to be potty trained. Well there are signs to look for in your child to tell if they’re ready to be potty trained. Some of these signs include: your child is able to stay dry for several hours, their able to pull their pants up and down by themselves, they know that they have to hold it until they’re able to get to the potty, they show an interest in imitating their older siblings going to the bathroom and that the child is getting more independant.
After you’ve determined that your child is definately ready to be potty trained you need to go out and buy a potty chair for them. Some things to consider when picking out a potty chair is to make sure it’s sturdy. You should make sure it fits securely on the toilet because this will help in preventing the potty chair from tipping off of the toilet. You should also be considering the comfort of the potty chair. You can buy a potty chair with a padded seat. You should also pick a potty chair with fewer parts. Also by letting the child pick out their own potty chair will give them a sense of that it’s their own and will make them want to use it.
There are things as a parent we can do to make it easier for out child to use the potty chair. Having them wear pants with an elastic waist, wearing double thick cotton underware and having girls wear short dresses. There are also things on clothes we shouldn’t consider our child wearing like clothes with buttons, zippers, belts, jeans, one piece outfits and overalls. Since all of these are harder for a child to undo themselves.
There are ways to make potty training easier for a child. In the earlier process of potty training you should praise the child for the good work they have done going on the potty. You should even praise them if they didn’t go on the potty. You could also have your child look at a book while their on the potty or you could chat with your child because this will help them relax. Doing this will make the process easier for them because they wouldn’t be thinking so much about what their expected to do. Setting up a daily routine for your child of when they use the potty will also help them because they will be put on the potty the same times every day which will help them set up a routine for themeselves.
You can also have the child pick out their own underwear. By doing this they’ll pick out underwear with characters they’re interested in on them. This will help them want to wear the underware and will also help in them not wanting to make a mess in them. Setting up a chart and putting a sticker on it everytime your child goes to the bathroom. Doing this will give them a sense of their accomplishment. You can also make up a chart with your child helping you. You and your child could cut out pictures and paste them on the chart so they know when they will be using the potty.
While potty training there are some things parents should not do. Make sure you don’t always ask them if they have to use the potty because doing this will only make them rebel on not using it. You should also make sure you don’t use a reward tactic like giving candy after everytime they go on the potty. Though doing this sometimes is alright but overdoing this may make them think that they’ll get a reward after everytime they go on the potty. This could then backfire and make them end up not using the potty
altogether.
As with any learning process their might be some obsticles that come up with potty training like that your child refuses to go poop on the potty. There may be differerent reasons for this. It may be that your child has had a painful bowl movement or that the child is just scared of the swooshing sound the toilet makes when it’s flushed. There are ways to make your child have a softer stool like having them drink more water and giving them fruit higher in fiber like apples and pears.
The main thing in potty training your child is to realize that this will not happen overnight it may take a while. You should also not push your child too hard like with anything else they have accomplished so far they ‘ll do it on their own when they are ready. You should also never once you start the potty training process return to putting diapers on your child this will only confuse them.
Following these suggestions on potty training will help make the process from diapers to using the potty easier on you and your child.
