Fresh fruit is one part of a healthy diet. It is low in fat and high in fiber. When buying fresh fruit, there are a few things you need to remember.

1. Buy fresh fruit when it is in season. When possible, buy locally grown fruit. The shorter teh distance the fruit has to travel, the fresher it is when it arrives at market. In addition, when fruit is in season, it is generally in abundance and the prices for fruit are at their lowest.

2. Remember that fresh fruit spoils quickly. If you buy more than you will use in a few days, you will end up throwing out the unused fruit.

3. Fruit bruises easily. Damaged fruit may found at a lower price, but it may not be a bargain. When purchasing your fruit, look it over for freshness and ripeness. Make sure that there are no bruises, punctures or soft spots, which indicates decay. When buying fruits like oranges or grapefruits, look for the one that is heavy for its size--that means it is full of juice.

4. Don't be dazzled by the shine on an apple. This is done to increase the "sex appeal" of a fruit. When you wash the wax off, you want to make sure you have a juicy, not a mealy apple.
