The old saying, “One man’s junk is another man’s treasure” rings true with garage saling. The object of garage saling is to find inexpensive or “cheap” treasures.
Some people are impulse buyers (In other words, they buy items that they find appealing even though they may not need them). When individuals aquire a whole bunch of “stuff” they don’t need, they often times sell it in a garage sale. This is a great way to find practically new stuff.
If you have a young family, and are looking for good quality, low priced clothes and toys, then a garage sale is the place to shop. Clothes sizes ranging from age newborn to age 10 can be found in great shape. When you approach the clothing piles, meticulously look over the article of clothing, noticing any irregularities (rips, stains or missing buttons,....). As for toys, most all can be washed.
A good starting place is finding out what days garage sales are most “active” in your area. Garage sales are most prevalent from spring through fall and run from Friday to Sunday. If you are not presently subscribed to a local newspaper, purchase one the day before you plan on garage saling.
A local street map is a must (Even if you are familiar with the area). This helps you to “map” your shopping destination. Read through the garage sale ads in the classified section. Group garage sales together according to location. Once they are grouped together, put them in some sort of order. (You may start in one location and then migrate around your town or city).
Next on the agenda is garage sale money. Figure out how much you are willing to spend. Most people running the sales do not feel comfortable accepting personal checks. Sometimes when you find a higher priced item (a price that exceeds the amount of money that most people normally would carry), a seller may make an exception. When gathering together the money, make sure you have small change (nickels, dimes, quarters and dollar bills).
Garage saling can be a very fun and economical way to find some of life’s simple pleasures. Some people don’t even know what they are looking for until they find it.
