The islands along the Savannah coast are inland islands. They are not out in the Atlantic Ocean, but are located among swampy, marshy land with rivers and other tributaries separating them. The island groupings around Savannah are those that have developed along the east side of town and those developing southeast of town.
• Eastern islands. These islands include Wilmington, Whitemarsh, Talahi, Oatland, and Tybee. The islands Wilmington and Whitemarsh in recent years have become some of the most popular places to live among the locals. Whitemarsh started in the early 1990s as being a hot spot for housing development. Then a few years later Wilmington island became even a better suburbian type place for people to live. And these are nice islands to live on, too. The islands on the east side of Savannah offer quite a bit to residents and visitors. The gorgeous terrain and flora provide for a nice relaxing setting for just about any activity. Of course, then there's Tybee Island, perhaps the most popular of the islands outside of Savannah. Tybee is more of a place for visitors to the city to hang out. It's the farthest east of all these islands and offer the best locations for beachgoing. A pier was built off Tybee Island prior to the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, as a place to observe racing that would take place off shore.
• Southeastern islands. This group of islands includes Skidaway and Dutch islands and the Isle of Hope. These islands have become the more premier places to live in the Savannah area. These residential areas provide some exclusive gated communities where the more upscale locals live. While many of the more well-to-do citizens of the city choose to live in Savannah's historical downtown area, the other most popular place is these islands on the southeastern part of the city. These islands possess natural beauty and some luxurious places to live. There are also plenty of golf courses on these islands to keep your golf game at its prime.
