BIOGRAPHY

Selma Ottiliana Lovisa Lagerlof, recipient of the 1909 Nobel Prize for Literature, was born in Marbacka, Sweden. Her father was a former army officer, and she was reared primarily by her grandmother. She was educated at the Royal Women's Superior Training Academy in Stockholm where she studied to become a teacher. After graduating she worked for ten years at a girl's school.

Lagerlof published her first book, GOSTA BERLINGS SAGA, 2 VOL., when she was 33. Her most famous work was the 1906 children's book, NILS HOLGERSSONS UNDERBARA RESA GENOM SVERIGE (THE WONDERFUL ADVENTURES OF NILS). She was the first woman to win the Nobel Prize for Literature.

Selma Lagerlof died at her home in Marbacka, Sweden in 1940.
