Skunks are actually part of the weasel family. They usually live to be around ten years old, even though they can and do sometimes live much longer. They are best known for the smelly spray they use when they feel they are being threatened by a potential enemy. The smelly spray is made by two musk glands in their bodies. They are usually black in color and may have a white stripe down the middle of their backs. SKunks can be other colors too.

Many people across the United States raise skunks as pets. Pet skunks can be bought from pet shops. Sometimes you will see and ad in your local newspaper selling a pet skunk. You do not have to worry about upsetting them and getting sprayed by a domesticated skunk, though, as they have had thier musk glands removed.

A skunk is an unusual pet to own, but they are really not hard to care for. They need to be fed and cared for just like any other pet you may have. Skunks arenot meat eaters. They eat vegetables, fruit, tuna fish, turkey, chicken, some grain cereals, and eggs. Skunks need these foods for good health. Acutally, if they can get ahold of them, theywill eat lots of things such as chocolate candy and cat food that is not healthy for them. Keep these things out of their reach. And, of course, as will any other animal, no matter what type they are, make sure that your pet skunk has plenty of clean water to drink at all times.

Skunks are just like little kids in that they are curious about anything and everything. They will get into your pocket book, empty out a bottom kithcen cupboard, or anything else they can get into. For this reason, you will need to lock-up all of your household cleaners and other things that they should not be into. They are not destructive little creatures, just very curious. It would also be a good idea to block off stairways and any other place in your house that your skunk does not need to be into. They can use their little paws like hands and can get into lots of things. You might consider not letting your skunk have the run of your house, especially at night when everyone is in bed and it is alone. You can do this by blocking off an area in your house to keep your skunk, or place him or her in a large cage. Remember though that your pet skunk needs to be handled and talked to and they need to be around people. This is how they learn to associate well with human beings. They need to belet free to run around and interact with you and your family. Pet skunks also like to be played with and they are full of energy and spunk.

Since skunks are generally kept indoors, they need to be trained to use a litter box justlike a kitten needs to be trained. Use a regular-sized litter box and place litter in it as usual. Yu can also use newspaper instead of kitty litter. You will need to show your pet skunk over and over and over again where the litter box is by placing him or her in it on a regular basis. Sooner or later, with loads of patience from you, depending on your pet skunk's attitude,he or she will eventually get the hang of it and use the litter box.

Along with the proper food, skunks need plenty of water, playtime, and a litter box. your new friend will need to visit the veterinarian periodically to make sure he or she is healthy and growing properly.
