While not a very large town in northern Indiana, South Bend has plenty to offer for the visitor just passing through or in town for business. Here are some things you can do in a day in South Bend, Indiana.
1.) Of course, you can’t come to South Bend without stopping at the University of Notre Dame, one of the finest educational institutions in the world. Home to over 10,000 students each year, 26 different athletic teams, and one of the most beautiful campuses you’ll find anywhere, Notre Dame attracts tens of thousands of visitors each year. If you’re lucky enough to be in town on a Saturday when the football team is playing, that’s the time to visit the campus. Even if you don’t have a ticket for the game, enjoy all of the pregame festivities throughout the
university, including cookouts by the fraternities and sororities, and the sounds of the Notre Dame Marching Band.
2.) The College Football Hall of Fame has finally found a home in this college town. Once located in Cincinnati, Ohio, the Hall moved to South Bend in the mid-90s where college football is king. The Hall attracts thousands of
visitors each year and has football memorabilia dating back to the 19th century. Along with the Hall of Fame plaques, there is plenty to see and do, including educational videos, highlight films, and interactive games.
3.) For those with a sweet tooth, visit the South Bend Chocolate Company with 16,000 square feet of chocolate heaven. Located at 3300 West Sample Street, tours of the factory are given each day, Monday through Friday.
4.) For the kids, stop by the Health Works Kids Museum. Here you will find over 12,000 square feet of health education aimed at kids from kindergarten through sixth grade. With numerous interactive exhibits throughout the building, kids will have fun and learn at the same time.
5.) While you will find numerous restaurants throughout the South Bend area, Catalino’s is certainly one of the finest. Featuring homemade Italian cooking, this family-owned restaurant is located at 235 South Michigan Street.
While not a big city, South Bend, Indiana has a lot to offer its citizens and visitors of the town. If you’re in for the day, stop by one of the many attractions and restaurants in one of America’s greatest college towns.
