It's no secret that the best time to see wildlife in Alaska is during the summer. But even if you're traveling in a non-summer month, expect to find a great place to sample the local culture. Here is a list of the festivals you can find in southeastern Alaska, when they are, and where you can find them.
• Festival of the North. This is a great party in Ketchikan that focuses on the culture, arts, and music of the people of southeastern Alaska. This festival is typically in February. For more information, call 907-225-6166.
• Tent City Winter Festival. This festival in Wrangell is during the first weekend of February. It's a celebration of the god rush of the area. 907-874-3901.
• Alaska Folk Festival. This April party in Juneau celebrates the arts and music of the region. 907-789-0292.
• Jazz and Classics Festival. This is a Juneau festival you don't want to miss. National jazz artists are brought in to provide some of the best party atmosphere during the month of May. 907-364-2801.
• Gold Rush Days. This festival is a two-day party that features physical wilderness competitions, music, and food. It's in June in Juneau. 907-586-2201.
• Blueberry Arts Festival. This party in the late summer in Ketchikan promises plenty of foods made out of blueberries from blueberry pies to cheesecakes to other baked goods. There are contests during this festival for all tastes. 907-225-2211.
• Alaska Day Festival. This festival is found in Sitka during the month of October. It features historical dances and cultural events highlighting the purchase of Alaska from the U.S.S.R. 907-747-5940.
• Holiday Fest. This November party in Sitak lasts through the beginning of the following year. It's quite a party. There are plenty of festivities all across the city each weekend. 907-747-5940.
