St. Augustine has retained its long colorful history. The city's historic district has the country's oldest house, schoolhouse, jail, and store. In addition, the city has 24 miles of the finest beaches in Northern Florida. There is lots to see in St. Augustine, which is why you need to know the best way to tour the city. By Car
Even if you select another tour, you will probably need a car to see most of St. Augustine. The car will allow you to take trips downtown, as well as daytrips outside the city. It is a short drive to the Anastasia State Recreation Area. This barrier island has an abundance of beautiful plant and wildflowers to see. About a mile from Anastasia is one of the oldest alligator farms. The St. Augustine Alligator Farm houses more than 1700 alligators and crocodiles. The most famous is Gomek, a 17.5 foot saltwater crocodile.
By Carriage
Several companies offer carriage tours through the historic district of St. Augustine. It is a great way to see the sights, and hear stories from the carriage driver. Most companies offer pick up points on the bayfront south of the fort.
By Train
Train tours depart the depot on San Marco Avenue every 20 minutes. A narrator describes the city's historic sites, while driving you through the district. Customers can get off and on at several stops, if they want to see the sights close up, or stop to shop.
By Ferry
The Matanzas Queen offers a free ride across the Intracoastal Waterway to Fort Matanzas Bay. Construction of the fort began in 1672, making it the oldest masonry fort in the United States.
By Ship
Scenic Cruises offer hour and a half sightseeing excursions. Tours depart from Municipal Manna and offer cruisers a great view of Matanzas Bay.
