Playing games with your family can be more than a good time. It can be a way of getting to know one another better, building bonds with each other and an opportunity to create memories that will last a life time! Many times it is easier to express yourself and your feelings in a game playing atmosphere, where it may not be as simple during everyday conversation. Here are a few suggestions that your family is sure to love.
Role Reversal - In this game, the names of each family member are written down on a small piece of paper and placed in a hat, tin can, or box. Each person takes turns pulling out a name. The name that you pull out is the name of the person that you have to act out. You must try to take on their persona. Talk and walk like them. This game helps you to better understand how your family perceives you. You may soon realize that you come across quite differently than you once had thought. It’s a way of getting a look at yourself from another perspective. And it can be hysterically fun!
Make Me Laugh - This game has been around for a very long time. You’ll soon see why when you play it at home for yourself. A timer is set and each person has an allotted amount of time (usually 60 seconds) in which to make the others laugh. You can use any props that you want, but you are not allowed to touch anyone. Whoever laughs is disqualified. This game is great for family togetherness, lifting ones spirits and it will really give those facial muscles a work out!
Quick Thoughts - You are allowed 30 seconds to tell of a memory that has been chosen by another team member. For example, if someone says “Christmas”, you have exactly 30 seconds to tell of your favorite memory that involves Christmas. The game becomes more fun when the memory words are more abstract. While remembering an incident involving Christmas may be rather simple, one pertaining to “cheese” or “an outhouse” may not.
Aside from the laughs that it brings, this game helps families to reflect on the wonderful times that they have spent together.
Dress for Dinner - Pick a certain theme or famous family to impersonate. For example, if a family member chooses “The Jackson’s” or “The Adams Family”, then each family member must show up for dinner dressed as a character or member from that family. If it’s a theme that is chosen, like “St. Patrick’s Day”, then you may want to come as a leprechaun, or dress all in green. Give everyone an opportunity to make a selection and it helps to set aside a certain night of the week to Dress for Dinner. You’ll find that your family will look forward to these nights and will make an even greater effort to be home for dinner.
Families that play games together usually enjoy each other’s company and spend more quality time together. Use your imagination and create games that are relevant to your families interests and personalities. You’ll have a wonderful time being together.
