What kind of therapy is there of treating an eating disorder? There are three main types of treatments available: Feminist Therapy, Cognitive Behavior Therapy and Brief Therapy. All of these have been successful with eating disorder patients.

Feminist Therapy specifically addresses the role of gender in today’s society. What types of influences and biases are women subjected to and how does this affect the decisions we make? Feminists use different techniques when treating women. The types of therapy that are successful for men may not be as successful for women, since women face a different set of issues.

Brief Therapy is used to help patient’s search for his or her own strengths and resources. This in turn helps them to recognize how they can cope in a situation using these new found strengths. This therapy places emphasis on finding strengths to cope rather then the real problem.

The last therapy to be discussed is Cognitive Behavior Therapy. This is a mix of two types of therapy: cognitive therapy and behavior therapy. While behavior therapy helps you break the usual responses you have in certain situations and replaces them with a healthier response, cognitive therapy teaches you to change your thinking patterns that cause the unhealthy reponses in the first place.

It is a good idea to speak with any therapist regarding there therapy techniques, so you may decide which type of therapy is best for you.
