BIOGRAPHY

Vidiadhar Surajprasad Naipaul, novelist, was born in Trinidad. His father was a journalist. He was educated at Oxford, and following graduation he became a freelance writer. He worked for two years as a broadcaster for the BBC's Caribbean Voices. He was knighted in 1989.

Naipaul's first novel, THE MYSTIC MASSEUR, was published when he was 25. He has written several works that reflect his extensive travels such as INDIA: A WOUNDED CIVILIZATION and A BEND IN THE RIVER. He was awarded the Booker Prize for IN A FREE STATE.
