Children and warts

When children get warts on their hand and feet, it can be embarassing for them. You will need to take them to the doctor and have the wart removed or use a wart remover.

In spite of the old wives tale that handling a frog or toad can give you warts, children seem to still get them. Warts are small benign skin tumors caused by various strains of the human papilloma virus. These are very common in children and teenagers. The virus enters through the skin when direct contact with an infected person is made or from moist surfaces such as a shower or locker room floor. It is very important that your child not pick or pull at the warts. You will want to wash the warts to make them soft and then add a treatment, like the ones below.

To treat common warts, buy a wart remover treatment such as Dr. Scholl's Clear Away One Step, which has bandaids with salicylic acid in fun colors for kids. Another product that has been on the market for a long time is Compound W. There are also other over the counter medications that you can purchase. If, after a few days, this medication does not work, or leaves the area being treated sore and red, discontinue use and take your child to the doctor. Your doctor most likely will have to burn off the warts with liquid nitrogen. This procedure removes them immediately and the doctor places a bandaid on the area and you are on your way home in no time.

Plantar warts appear on the soles of the feet, especially on the ball and heel.

Flat Warts are warts that are flesh colored and often seen on backs of hands and the face.

Children like to keep the warts covered in school because they look unsightly and children like to make fun of other kids by making comments.

If you take them to the doctor, they won't have to go through this unnecessary torment at school.
