The prescribed method to be used in undergoing induced abortion is determined on how long a woman was pregnant. This is called(LMP)Last Menstrual Period. It usually takes 39 to 40 weeks before a child is conceived. In between these weeks,a time period known as trimesters classify them. The first trimester takes 13 weeks,the second composes 14 to 24 weeks and the third, 25th week till conception.The safest abortions could be done during the first trimester.Later trimesters could need complex operations and impose more danger to the pregnant woman's condition.
Some abortions could be done in pill form for the first 7 weeks of conception.An example would be for a woman to take the drug mifepristone or RU-486.This stops further pregnancy.She again takes the misoprostol for the uterus(place where the fetus grows)to contract and eject the fetus inside.
Another procedure which consists of the cervix being expanded so a tube called cannula would go inside the uterus and expel the fetus is called vacuum aspiration. This is undergone for the 6th till 14th week of pregnancy.A similar process which is done by using a spoon-shaped tool called curette to scrape the tissues in the uterine lining for fetus abortion is called dilation and evacuation. This is used for the first week of the second trimester till the 24th week of conception.
Abortions for the second trimester called induction abortion is wherein a portion of amniotic fluid,which engulfs the fetus is injected with a different fluid to replace it. Uterus contractions follow,allowing the expulsion of fetus.
Abortions for the last trimester,third,involves major surgical procedures. One process called hysterotomy opens the uterus and takes away the fetus.Another process called intact dilation and extraction composes the passing out of the fetus by way of the vaginal canal,starting with the feet.The parts of the nervous system like the brain and spinal cord are put under suction. The final step is for the skull to be destroyed.
