We all have our own ideas about God. We try and make Him fit into what we think He should be. We try to fit Him into a box in our minds; make Him something we can fully understand. But Who does He say He is? What does God tell us about Himself and what can we learn from His revelations?
God reveals His character and nature to us in the names He takes for Himself. The Hebrew name Yahweh is the common name for God used in the Old Testament. In English Bibles, this name is substituted by the word LORD in capital letters. The Jewish tradition is to call God Adonai Yahweh, the sovereign Yahweh.
The word Yahweh means âto beâ or âto be active and presentâ. God is with us and an active participant in our lives and in our world. From the earliest texts, this is Godâs expression of Himself. It is comforting to know that God is with us, that He cares enough to be involved in our lives. He is not a remote, uncaring God.
He is the Most High God â ⌠Blessed be Abram of the most high God, possessor of heaven and earth: â (Genesis 14:19) In the ancient world, as today, many religions existed, each with their own god. The God of the Bible, the God of Christians and Jews, tells us that He is the Most High God. The early Jews and Christians were often slaves or captured peoples living among strangers in strange lands. God wanted them to remain separate from these cultures and keep to His laws and reminded them that there was no god greater than Him.
When prophets prophesied for kings in these foreign lands, God instructed the prophets to tell them of the Most High God, to set Him above and distinct from their gods. This was an opportunity for these early people to witness the God of the Bible.
Our God is the Almighty God â⌠the LORD appeared to Abram, and said unto him, I am the Almighty God;â (Genesis 17:1b) Those who serve the Almighty God need never fear for He protects and provides for us. No strength is greater than the Almighty God. No force can subdue the Almighty God. No matter what the world may do to us, the Almighty God saves our soul for Himself. No power can snatch us from His hand.
In exchange for His protection and love, our God expects our loyalty and devotion. He is a jealous God. âFor thou shalt worship no other god: for the LORD, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous Godâ (Exodus 34:14) We are His and He guards us as such. We are precious to Him, He has bought us for a price, a very steep price, the blood of His Son Jesus Christ. Our loyalty is demanded if we are to remain His.
It is comforting to know that our God is eternal. He has always been and will always be. No moment goes by without His attention, nor will any moment go by without His love and protection. âThe eternal God is thy refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms:â (Deuteronomy 33:27a) He is with us and lives in us always. âAnd Joshua said, Hereby ye shall know that the living God is among you,â (Joshua 3:10a) We are His family.
God cares for us as His children. He is our Heavenly Father, caring more for us than an earthly father ever could. Knowing that we are so loved, we must also realize that we are fully provided for, too. âBehold the fowls of the air: for they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are ye not much better than they?â (Matthew 6:26) Loved, protected, provided for and cherished. This is what we are with our Father.
There is no limit to Godâs power to care for us. He is Omnipotent. He set the stars in the sky and all things created are held together by His power. âAh Lord GOD! behold, thou hast made the heaven and the earth by thy great power and stretched out arm, and there is nothing too hard for thee:â (Jeremiah 32:17) He can use anything for our good, our protection, our enjoyment, and our enlightenment.
And, He knows perfectly what we need. His care for us is perfect because He is Omniscient, all knowing. â⌠God is greater than our heart, and knoweth all things.â (1 John 3:20b) There is nothing behind us; with us or ahead of us that God doesnât know. He can care for us perfectly because He can see perfectly how all things interact to affect our lives.
Many times in our lives we encounter situations that just donât make sense to us. These are the times that we must have faith that God knows what He is doing and that He is with us taking care of our needs, even when we donât know what we need or donât feel Him with us.
He is with us always because He is Omnipresent âWhither shall I go from thy spirit? or whither shall I flee from thy presence?â (Psalms 139:7) Because He is infinite and cannot be contained, He cannot be restrained from us, either. He is faithful to us, watching over our lives and guiding us towards perfection. His Spirit lives within us, teaching us His ways. He is our very breath.
We could not begin to put God in a box for He is infinite âBut will God indeed dwell on the earth? behold, the heaven and heaven of heavens cannot contain thee; how much less this house that I have builded?â (1 Kings 8:27) Just as we cannot wrap our human minds around the concept of an infinite number, we cannot ever understand or appreciate the greatness of God. We naturally attempt to assign limits to things in this world; it makes us feel safer if we can understand a mystery. With God, though, we can only have faith. He is bigger than anything we can understand.
God wants for us to know Him intimately. He wants us to call out to Him as a child calls out to a father. He reveals Himself to us in His Word so that we can discover Him, love Him and rely on Him. He is always waiting to protect, guide and comfort us. We only have to call out to Him and He answers us.
