Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin, is one of the most popular tourist attractions in the upper Midwest – and probably the hot spot in the state. Every summer visitors come to the area in droves to enjoy the beautiful scenery and the family attractions that have made the area famous. Most Wisconsinites enjoy the Dells as an easy family getaway or day-trip, as well.
The Dells has something for everyone. The city itself is named for the beautiful and unusual rock formations that jut up into the sky and form a strikingly attractive display along the river’s edge. The scenery alone is breathtaking and no visit to the Dells would be complete without a boat tour of the Upper and Lower dells. In the Upper Dells, the boats maneuver in and through narrow channels flanked by steep rock walls and offer a dramatic view of the area. Some tours stop along the way and allow passengers to disembark for a short time at Stand Rock formation, Cold Water Canyon, and Witches Gulch. The Lower Dells tours are also beautiful, though the river is wider and the sandstone structures are a bit less majestic. Tours are narrated and describe the area’s history, making it a wonderful learning experience for all.
Many visitors enjoy the opportunity to tour the area on one of the Dells Ducks. These unique vehicles are a combination of bus and boat, traveling both in and out of the water with ease. The ride is designed to thrill and entertain as well as view and enjoy the Lower Dells area, as the Ducks plunge into the lake and river, shoot up and down hills and valleys, traverse through narrow canyons and sandstone formations, and splash again back into the water. These tours are also narrated and entertaining and provide fun for the entire family.
Wisconsin Dells is also famous for its wonderful water parks. The city offers both outdoor and indoor water parks, so the area is hopping with a splashingly wet good time even during the winter months. The area boasts that it has the area’s largest indoor and outdoor water parks in America, and that may very well be. With wave pools, waterslides, bumper boats, inner tube slides, lazy rivers, kiddie pools, miniature golf, go-karts, arcades, carnival rides, picnic areas, concession stands, and gift shops, families could easily spend an entire weekend at one of these parks and entertain everyone in the process.
If that’s not enough to keep you occupied, or if you’re planning to spend a week in the area, there are tons of other attractions and sites to see. The area boasts spectacular gardens with life-size fairy tale and nursery rhyme characters, wildlife parks and petting zoos, horseback riding, and horse-drawn wagon tours of the canyon.
In the summer you’ll enjoy tours of a futuristic house with hands-on displays for the kids – a great learning experience, circus entertainment, helicopter rides, water skiing shows, acrobatic entertainment, and daredevil acts.
Wisconsin Dells also highlights the areas Native American Indian heritage with shows featuring Indian stories and folklore, costumes, dances, and traditional ceremonies. This history is also evident in the crafts and gifts available in the area, and area museums also feature displays focusing on the Native American culture.
Opportunities to camp, hike, bike, walk the trails, and enjoy the area’s natural beauty are everywhere. So are opportunities to fish, boat, canoe, paddleboat, or otherwise enjoy the scenery by land or water.
The area features year-round resorts; fast-food, family style, and fine dining establishments for every taste; souvenir shops, gift shops, and delightful little stores filled with everything from homemade candy and fudge to trinkets, treasures, and area memorabilia.
In the wintertime, the area has some fantastic cross-country and downhill skiing, horsedrawn sleigh rides, and ice skating.
With something for everyone, Wisconsin Dells is the ultimate vacation destination!
