The heart shaped wreaths are good to use year-round by simply changing the type of flower or decoration added to the wreath. I am giving instructions for two different bases for the wreath. The straw wreath is harder to punch through so I recommend a Phillips screwdriver. The straw wreath is very sturdy. If you use a white material you can easily keep this up all year long and just change the color of the bow, and the added decorations. The Styrofoam wreath is much easier to punch and works even with a pencil. It is very light and more fragile than the straw wreath. It also can be used all year long. If you pack this, be careful. Styrofoam breaks easily. Use plenty of tissue to cushion it in the box. If you decide to give this wreath as a gift, use the straw base. It is also suitable for mailing.
Other uses for the wreath:
Baby showers—small pink and blue silk bows and little tied on babies or storks
Bridal Showers—tie on white ribbon and tiny plastic watering cans or plastic umbrellas.
Anniversaries—25th is silver, 50th is gold. Add appropriate colored ribbons and flowers
Weddings—a plastic bride and groom, little bouquets of flowers, and white silk ribbon
MATERIALS
2 yards of netting material 45" wide, in your choice of color.
A ruler
Scissors or pinking sheers
Cardboard for a template
Black magic marker
A screwdriver
White tacky glue
Choice of a heart shaped Styrofoam or straw wreath
Paper shopping bag or papertowels
Wax paper or a ceramic tile
Satin ribbon at least two inches wide and ten inches long.
Additional materials according to your project:
Seasonal decorations such as silk flowers and ribbon
STEP ONE
Cut a rectangle pattern or template from cardboard
Size is 2" wide by 5" long
STEP TWO
Fold your fabric in half lengthwise, then in half. Since the netting is thin you can cut several layers at a time. Cover your table with the opened and flattened paper shopping bag or paper towels.
STEP THREE
Lay the template on your fabric and trace around it. Repeat.
STEP FOUR
Cut out the rectangles making sure you cut out the marks from the marker.
Cut all your pieces at one. If you have pinking sheers use that or a regular fabric scissors. Don't worry if they aren't all perfectly sized. It won't make much difference.
STEP FIVE
Lay your heart shape on a table
Place some of the white tacky glue on wax paper or a ceramic tile
STEP SIX
Take the screwdriver and center a piece of the netting on it. Dip lightly into the tacky glue. Push the fabric into the wreath with the screw driver still in the center. Remove the screw driver. Wipe off the tip and repeat. Keep the material close together. You have plenty of material to make a fluffy wreath.
STEP SEVEN
Depending on the time of year add silk flowers or another seasonal decoration.
Example: hearts and flowers for Valentine's
Bunnies and flowers for Easter
STEP EIGHT
Finish off with a big bow in a matching or contrasting color.
Your wreath can be used on an outside door or inside the house. If you add a potpourri scent it will be a fragrant addition to any room.
