Allergy shots are given to people who don't get satisfactory relief from antihistamines. We take a combination of the things that the people are most allergic to and inject it into their body to teach the body not to react to them. Most allergists make the patient come into their office for treatment. However, there is a new system available. It's allergy drops that people put under their tongue. ABC News covered it 4 or 5 months ago for the second time in a couple of years. In Great Britain, for example, it's against the law to give allergy shots. Everybody gets allergy drops. In Italy and France 70% of all allergy patients get drops rather than shots because they are safer. They are equally effective and the patient can do them at home. Most of my patients now get allergy drops. We call allergy shots or allergy drops immunotherapy. I am an immunotherapist. The work that I do is immunotherapy whether I do drops or shots.
