"Well, antique ceiling fans are very specialized," says Sharon Nunnally, who has been in the antique lighting business for 20 years and is the owner of Antique Lighting and Restoration in Denver. "It is a very specialized fixture and my advice to anybody buying an antique ceiling fan would be to make sure that they buy that particular item from someone who restores fans. When buying an antique ceiling fan that's generally going to be 70 years old or better, you want to be careful about whether or not you really know what you are getting because of all of the mechanical issues that they tend to have. There are people who restore antique ceiling fans and they are a very specialized crowd. Buying a restored antique ceiling fan in perfect working order could be very expensive."

Nunnally advises against purchasing an antique ceiling fan at a flea market or other location where you can't see if it works properly. She also recommends thinking twice about paying a high price for an antique ceiling fan when there are now many ceiling fan styles available that are also safe and energy efficient to use. "This is one item I would never buy at a flea market," she continues. "There are now many new fans that have very complementary looks to work with either with your existing antique fixtures, other ceiling fixtures or new fixtures."

A ceiling fan can be used year round. During the summer months the slight breeze of a ceiling fan can lower a room's temperature by 5 to 7 degrees. That means the thermostat can be set 5 to 7 degrees higher and the temperature in the room feels the same. Change the direction of the fan blades during the winter months so hot air that naturally rises near the ceiling circulates throughout the room, and the room will be 5 to 7 degrees warmer. That means the thermostat can be set 5 to 7 degrees lower and the temperature in the room feels the same.

Before purchasing either an antique or a new ceiling fan, there are important factors to consider. Ceiling fans have 3 to 5 blades. that are 30 to 60 inches in diameter. Older ceiling fans have blades of solid wood, but you can choose other blade materials on new ceiling fans. Be sure you know the dimensions of the room where you want the fan. A ceiling fan needs to be mounted in the center of the room at least 2 feet from any walls or sloped ceilings, and the fan blades are 30 to 60 inches in diameter. Also, a ceiling fan needs to be at least 7 feet from the floor so no one walks into the moving blades. A ceiling fan needs to be mounted on a very sturdy ceiling using a specially designed ceiling light fixture box. Never mount a ceiling fan on a standard ceiling light fixture box. If you're not experienced with home projects involving electrical wiring, let a professional electrician install your ceiling fan. It's worth their small fee to keep you and your family safe.
