How Do I Apply for Government Grants?

Overview

The U.S. government sponsors grants to its citizens to facilitate projects that increase societal welfare and to assist people such as veterans and those with disabilities. There are a staggering number of grants available in almost every field imaginable, so whether one is interested in finding alternative energy sources, starting fine-art programs for urban youth or organizing a wheelchair race, there is likely to be a grant available that could get the idea off the ground.

Step 1

Go to the government's grant website at http://www.grants.gov/
Step 2

On the left hand side of the page, click the link "Find for grant opportunities."

Step 3

Use the site's search tools to locate a grant that applies to you. There will not always be a grant that applies to everyone, but there is a very diverse offering of grants.
Step 4

If you locate a grant you want to apply for, go back to the homepage and click "Get registered." Registration is necessary to apply for grants.
Step 5

Go back to the homepage and click "Apply for grants." This allows you to download a grant application. The government site has a tutorial on how to complete an application in both Adobe Acrobat Reader and Pure Edge Viewer.
Step 6

Follow the steps on the apply-for-grants page and submit the application. There should be a sign-and-submit button on the package, which automatically uploads and submits it. If you have trouble, go back and reread the site's instructions.
