How to Apply for Government Grants for Free

By Johnny Kampis

  • Overview

Unlike loans, you do not have to pay back grants. A government grant is a gift of financial assistance for the purpose of stimulation or support and authorized by the laws of the United States. Both organizations and individuals are eligible to receive grants based on purpose and need.
  • Don't Take It for Granted; Grants Require Research

    • Step 1

Check out the U.S. government's grants website by following the link in Resources. Here, you can search and apply for a number of grants from a variety of federal agencies. You can also sign up and receive notice of grants that may be made available in the future.

    • Step 2

Read the eligibility requirements to determine if you are qualified for the grants in which you are interested. Grants for individuals are usually given for purposes like educational financial aid, artistic endeavors and scientific research.
    • Step 3

Craft a well-written proposal outlining your objectives and a budget for your project. Take the time to consider all the steps your project will take and the funding it will require. If you receive the grant, you may have to provide periodic written reports of your progress and financial state, and evaluations of the program.
    • Step 4

Consult your local or state Department of Social Services or Department of Housing to find out about grants for home purchase or repair. If you need this type of grant, there may be some available in your area.
    • Skill: Easy
    • Tip: Be diligent in your research, and be sure to sign up for grant notices at the site in Resources.
    • Tip: If your writing ability is lacking, seek someone with professional grant-writing experience to help you.
