Online education is increasing in popularity. Every year, there are more and more online education institutions. Online colleges have opened up educational opportunities to people who could not attend a traditional college. Online education is a smart choice for some students, but it is not for everyone.
Stigma
There is a stigma attached to online colleges. Some people believe the misconception that online colleges do not give a person a "real education." Although this is not true, it is something to consider. Family, friends and potential future employers all may have an opinion about online education. Although, future employers probably will not realize that your college degree came from an online school, unless you tell them.
Cost
With a few exceptions, the tuition for online colleges is cheaper than conventional colleges. The cheaper tuition can make a college education affordable to people who could not otherwise afford a college education. One thing to consider is that student loans do not normally pay for online colleges. This is not usually much of a problem though, because most online schools offer affordable payment plans.
Time
Online education is ideal for people who have jobs, are parents, or who have other time schedule constraints. At an online school, coursework can be completed on your own schedule. Usually it can also be completed at your own speed. You can work as slow or as fast as you want to. You can complete a 4-year degree in 2 years or in 6 years. Note: Some online schools have a standard that sets minimum coursework requirements per semester.
Credit
A potential problem with online schools is that some conventional colleges do not accept credits from online colleges. If a student wishes to later transfer to a traditional college from an online college, he may not be able to do so. If there is a possibility that you will want to transfer credits from an online school to a traditional school, contact the traditional school first to determine if it will accept transfer credits from the online school.
Mentoring
The amount of student-teacher interaction varies at different online schools. With some online schools, student-teacher interaction is very limited. It is best to contact the school before registering, to find out its communication methods among students and teachers, to see if it meets your needs.
