Should you allow yourself an entire day for one audition?

Allowing plentiful time is necessary, but usually an audition won't take a whole hour.

I don't think so. If the audition is an hour away you better leave a couple hours ahead of time. I would spend an hour or two preparing for the part, depending upon the size. It is up to you, your comfort zone. It depends on how long it takes for you to feel prepared and how much time you can afford. If they are running behind schedule, just bite the bullet and accept it. Do not leave or the director may feel you are inconsiderate and don't care about working. An open call will probably take longer because it is first come, first serve. I, by the way, have never received work from an open call audition. Unions do more open call auditions because they have to see everyone for legal purposes. Usually those parts are already given away because the producers and directors who are involved with the project already have someone in mind. By law they have to make it available. If I had an eight o'clock audition I would have to be lined up for the audition at the headquarters by six in the morning so I would be one of the first ten or fifteen actors to go. Go for open calls as early as you can and be prepared to wait.
