While there is a burgeoning market that sells specific types of baby furniture, most experienced parents know that a baby changing station is simply not worth the money. The baby will get too big too quickly to use furniture built for such a narrow focus. You can build one at home by thinking about the items that are critical during a diaper change and making sure those items are easily available.
Step 1
List the items needed for a diaper change. They typically include changing pad, diapers, clothes, socks, ointment and wipes.
Step 2
Select a handled plastic organizer that can fit four or five diapers, the wipes box and the ointment. You can also use a wicker basket, if this fits your decor. However, wicker can snag clothing and scratch you or the baby.
Step 3
Place a change of clothes and a change of socks next to the items in the organizer. Make sure you can lift the organizer as well as carry your baby.
Step 4
Find a quiet spot that isn't drafty in which to change your baby, and place the organizer and changing pad there. The safest location is the floor. Not only does it avoid the potential that your baby might roll off and hurt himself while you're reaching for the phone, it also saves wear and tear on your back leaning over a dresser or desk that is at an awkward height.
