How to Make a Business Card Online

Designing business cards online is so fun, you might get sidetracked from the work you should be doing. With hundreds of options, you will undoubtedly find more than one business card that suits your unique profession. See Resources below for sites to investigate.

Step 1

Choose full-color, flat-print cards for a contemporary business card that pops. Full-color cards can feature actual photos of people or tools of the trade, or they can take a more artistic, abstract effect. The text blends with the artwork seamlessly and, in many cases, you can add extra information on the back of the card. Click-and-drag options allow you to move text to any position on the card you like.

Step 2

Go for a more traditional design with two-color, raised-print business cards. These designs usually feature an image in two colors, like a green rake and brown leaves for example, printed on white card stock with raised black lettering. These, too, can often include extra text on the back of the card.

Step 3

Choose pre-formatted cards if personalization is no big deal. While you're still free to select your choice of font and font size, you aren't able to move the text around. Typically, only one color is allowed and adding a logo might not be available.

Step 4

Opt for zingy papers and foils if you have the extra money and you're looking for something that stands out. Organic paper, velum, vegetable dyes and more are all available.

Step 5

Create a prototype when you've chosen the artwork you like. You will be taken to a page where you can add your business name, address and so on. Play with the alignment and fonts until the card is exactly how you like it. If it doesn't turn out the way you planned, go back and try a different design. It's really easy, and in theory it shouldn't take long. But when you want to try on a bunch of different designs, the process ends up being longer (and more fun) than you expected.

Skill: Moderately Easy

Tip: If price is important to you, look closely at what each printer offers. For example, Office Depot and 123Print have the same collection of designs, but are they printed on the same weight paper? How do shipping costs differ? How many do you get in your order?
