Business cards can be a costly part of starting a new business. But you can save quite a bit of money by creating your own business cards on the computer. Making your own business cards allows you to create your own design and add your own business logo without the additional expenses you would incur by ordering the cards from a printer.
Step 1
Open the software program you've selected to use to make your cards. Microsoft Works is one that many people use. You may have the option to use a pre set template for the cards, or you may creat your own template. Decide which you would like to do and make the appropriate selection on the software. If you have purchased pre-cut business card paper from an office supply store, look for the Avery compatibility number on the front of the paper. Microsoft Works has templates for many of these compatibility numbers that allows you to pull up a template directly onto the software.
Step 2
Select the size of the margins you'd like and the size of the card itself. If you've chosen to create your own template, you'll need to set the parameters of where you want text to appear on the card. A standard business card is 3.5 inches by two inches.
Step 3
Choose a background picture or design that you'd like to use as your business logo. Click on "Pictures" on your Microsoft Works software, for example, and click on "Browse" to locate the image on your desktop that you would like to add to your business cards.
Step 4
Enter in all the information and text you'd like on the card. This could include many pieces of information: your name, your phone number, your business name and business address. Highlight the text and select a font that you'd like the text to be in and size you want the text to be.
Step 5
Verify that all of the information, design or pictures and style are what you'd like for your card. Before you print the card, it's a good idea to save a copy of it on your desktop by going to "File" and clicking "Save As" to choose the name for your document.
Step 6
Place the stock paper in your printer. On the screen select "Print." A menu will come asking how many copies you'd like and how you want them arranged on the page. Once you've made the selections you want, commence printing.
Step 7
Depending on how you arranged the cards on the page you will need to cut them apart. This can be done simply using the scissors and a straight edge. If you are using paper that's precut for business cards, gently bend the cards and separate them.
