What are some candle making molds?

Learn about the types of candle making molds.

There are lot of different choices in terms of a candle molds. There are metal and plastic molds. There are also Polyurethane candles. In candle making one thing that helps make a better candle is finding the right mold for your candle. For example, if you know you want to make standard 3 x 3 pillar candle that you see in the market, an aluminium mold is probably the best way to go. It gives the wax a good finish. It gives the candle a good release from the mold. That mold doesn't hold the color fragrance and the resulting candle is a very nice appearing candle. Plastic molds are the same. They give a nice finish too. You have to watch pouring temperatures with plastic molds because pouring wax that is too hot can destroy the mold. There are a number of shapes and sizes that are out there. You can buy pyramids, balls, hexagons, and octagons to name a few. There are a number of different shapes that are available through plastic molds.

Aluminum molds, in my opinion, by far are the best molds available for general candle making. The shortcomings of aluminium molds are as you get into unique shapes and sizes, they aren't as readily available. When you get to novelty shapes, they are really not suitable, because they are not available in aluminium molds. When you want specialty shapes or sizes, you are dealing with the plastic or Polyurethane molds.

Q: Are molds expensive?

Mold can run anywhere from 50 cents to 24 dollars.

Q: You can use them over and over, right?

Yes. Aluminium molds, if treated and handled right, will last a lifetime.

Q: So, basically it comes down to collecting the types of molds you like?

Yes. If you really want to start making candles for craft shows, you might want to have 10 or 12 candles with the same mold. It also helps to think outside the box for unique molds. Candy molds also make great alternatives for candles. When our company first started we used milk cartons as molds. They make a nice square candle. Baby food jars are also nice to use.

Q: How do you clean molds?

If you pour your candle properly, there is very little cleanup. Aluminum candles always clean up nice. When you warm the mold, the wax comes off. Wax releases very good from most molds, whether they are plastic or aluminum.
