How to Change Bulbs in Tanning Beds

The light bulbs in a tanning bed should be replaced every 3 to 5 years. Changing them when their life expectancy is down to 20 percent. This is especially true of beds used in a professional tanning salon. Not every bed can use every type of bulb, and this is why most operators rely on their dealer to provide and even install the new bulbs. But if you know the exact type of bulbs to use, replacing them is quite simple.

Step 1

Make sure you know the exact type of bulbs used in your tanning bed. This includes size and intensity (100 watts at 5 percent UV level is average). You should ask the dealer this right when you purchase the bed. The owner's manual should also tell you, or check the brand and type name at the end of the bulbs. Once you know, purchase replacement bulbs in bulk to save money.

Step 2

Unplug the tanning bed and clean it of dirt and dust before disassembling anything. Remove the acrylic shield that covers the bulbs, clean it thoroughly and set it aside where it won't be damaged.

Step 3

Remove the old bulbs. This is done very much like removing full-size florescent bulbs. Please note that these bulbs contain mercury and other dangerous elements, just like florescents. You can't just throw them in the trash; they must be taken to a disposal facility that takes old batteries and florescent bulbs. Find out where the closest such facility is in your area.

Step 4

Install the new bulbs in the bed. It's a good idea to keep at least one old bulb stored away, especially if your supply is running low. This way, you'll have a way to know the exact type of replacement bulbs you need to get.

Step 5

Plug the bed back in and turn it on to test the new bulbs. If it takes a few seconds for the bulbs to light after turning it on, the problem is likely in the bulb starters. Replace them if needed.

Step 6

Replace and secure the acrylic back in the tanning bed. Clean it once more to remove all fingerprints from where you touched it during the changing process. You should probably unplug it again before cleaning, especially if you use any cleaning liquids.

Skill: Moderately Easy

Tip: Check the acrylic for small, sandpaper-like scratches, and replace it if you find any.
Bulb starters usually need to be replaced once a year.
