What special features are available with a satellite dish?

Dish Network satellite tv offers 500 channels of programming.

Lynn Jenkins is the president of Satellite Country. In six years of business, it has been voted a top 10 company the last two years. Like many experts that work with satellite, Jenkins is a strong advocate in the quality of picture that comes with high definition television.

"There is huge difference in clarity," Jenkins said. "High definition runs at 1080i, which just means it is a very clear picture. HD is kind of like being right there. You can see every blade of grass. There are very few commercials produced in high definition, so the channels are always commercial free. It definitely changes the way you watch TV."

Jenkins also went on to specifically name one satellite company that is making extra strides to win customers by offering high definition at a very low rate.

"Dish Network at this point in time gives you six months of free high definition programming because they are trying to introduce it," he said. "It's $5 a month for 10 high definition Voom channels. There is nobody in the United States that offers that except Dish Network."

Another special feature that is offered by satellite companies is multiple channels. A lot of satellite companies will attempt to bring in new customers with the number of channels that are offered. For the most part, the number of channels offered by each satellite company will differ, but most offer channels ranging well into the mid hundreds.

"Everyone quotes a different number, but you usually have around 500 channels," Jenkins said. "You can get a basic package with Dish Network called "the 60 most watched channels," for as little as $31.99 a month. That gives you all your basic core programming. Dish Network also has well over 300 regular channels plus over 100 international channels."
