Why are certain china patterns discontinued?

Reduction in sales usually leads to a design being discontinued.

There are two factors, one is sales drops and the second one is often times we develop something that is so complicated that when we go into initial production, it looks like it's going to be easier to do and as we start to produce it just gets to be the almost impossible to maintain the quality and that's happened to us before the pattern is still very popular. So basically our rough determining factor is if we don't sell 100 sets per year we will end up putting that on a future discontinued list and we will announce that we are dropping production on that pattern in two years. If we happen to have that pattern we recommend that you fill it in within the next two years because we can go back to the factory and have them make more. We also have the Noritake Service Center which might possibly still be carrying the item.
