How to Make Chocolate Covered Strawberries

Chocolate covered strawberries continue to be one of the most popular treats on Valentine's Day and other romantic celebrations. These delectable treats can be made with just a few ingredients at home; you just need your favorite chocolate, fresh fruit and a few pieces of kitchen equipment to create a gourmet treat in under an hour.

Step 1

Wash the strawberries thoroughly under cool water but do not remove the leaves and stems. Set to dry on a kitchen paper towel.

Step 2

Line the baking pan with wax paper so that the entire sheet is covered completely. This will be used for setting the strawberries after they have been dipped in chocolate.

Step 3

Place each type of chocolate into a separate microwaveable bowl and heat in the microwave on medium-high heat for 20 to 30 seconds. Stir, then reheat for 10 to 15 second intervals until the chocolate chips are completely melted and the chocolate is smooth.

Step 4

Dip each strawberry into the white chocolate to cover it completely; hold the strawberry firmly at the stem and lower it into the bowl of melted chocolate. Hold above the bowl for a few seconds so that the excess chocolate drips away, then leave to set on the wax paper-lined baking sheet for approximately 10 to 15 minutes until chocolate is firm.

Step 5

Dip each white chocolate-covered strawberry into the melted dark chocolate to cover them in a second layer. Dip these halfway to create a "tuxedo" effect; leave to set on the wax paper-lined baking sheet.

Step 6

Leave the pan of strawberries in the refrigerator for approximately 20 to 30 minutes until the chocolate becomes hard.

Skill: Easy

Ingredients:

  • 8 ounces white chocolate chips

  • 8 ounces dark chocolate chips

  • 1 pint of fresh strawberries

  • Baking sheet

  • Wax paper

  • 2 small microwaveable bowls

  • Kitchen paper towel

Tip: Use other types of chocolate and chips to create variations of the classic recipe; peanut butter, cinnamon chips, mint chips and butterscotch chips can be melted separately to create different flavors of covered strawberries.
Dip the warm chocolate covered strawberries in nuts or sugar crystals for extra decoration.
Chocolate covered strawberries are best eaten on the same day they are made.

Warning: To avoid food contamination, don't leave chocolate strawberries out on a platter in a warm area or under the sun for extended periods of time.
Don't reuse burned chocolate.
Ensure strawberries are as fresh and clean as possible to reduce the risk of spoilage and food contamination.
