Some basic kitchen knife sets may include several highly used knives like the chef's knife, paring knife, bread knife, utility knife and possibly a slicing knife or pair of shears. They may also include some steak knives as well if the set is a primary kitchen set. Many of these sets will come with a wooden storage block or tray. Some specialty or high quality knives may even come in a roll or bag to store them in. Most of these are for culinary experts and chefs who take their own knives with them.
Knife sets come with various numbers of knives. A more complete set will have more knives in more sizes and types. To select the set that is right for your needs you must think about how often and for what purposes you will use the set. Many higher quality knives and cutlery pieces may be available individually as well so you can build a collection that best fits your needs and/or your budget. Not everyone wants to or is able to afford getting a large set when they make an initial purchase. They may want to try out a product to see if it is what they like, want, and need before making a large investment.
Some knives come with wooden or other fancy handles while others are made of synthetic or other materials. Knives and cutlery are made for many occasions from fine dining to backyard cookouts. Some cutlery is meant to last for decades while other pieces are intended to be more disposable. It is always important that cutlery pieces feel good in your hand when using the item. Cutlery that is well maintained and properly used may last for years to come. It is most highly recommended that all cutlery pieces be washed by hand rather than being cleaned in a dishwasher. Hot water and detergents may damage wooden handles or cause damage to cutlery items after prolonged exposure. Never soak or leave cutlery items damp after use and washing. Always dry them thoroughly. Also don't place stainless steel items and silver-plated cutlery together in a dishwasher. Use care to not have pieces rub together as this may dull your knives.
Pricing will vary depending on the materials and construction techniques used to make the items. It is not always the best investment to buy higher priced items but likewise it is not always the best economic move to buy cheaper pieces either. Consider what you want and what you can afford and then weigh your options carefully by shopping around for the set that is the best fit for you.
