I think one of the most important things is if it has leafs in it, how far it will open, how much extra room you can get. Lots of times it will be a table and six chairs, something to that effect. See if you can add chairs to it.
When you have kids, I would be real careful with some of the tabletops. Personally, I would stay away from the glass tables with kids. I would also consider dining room tables and dining sets that have a distressed look on the top. If they bang it with their spoon a little bit or something, it is actually going to stay. The ease of cleaning it up, does it have a good finish on the top? Some marble tops are beautiful, but they are probably not real kid friendly.
I would check the chairs and see how sturdy they are. I think in some sets the chairs are just built really cheap; they start wobbling and causing problems. You do not have to spend a ton of money to get a good set of chairs and dining room tables either, but I would look everything over real well to make sure that the foundation is solid. Make sure that the chairs aren't going to wobble.
