How do the swamp cooler pump and motor work?

Swamp coolers evaporate the water off of a cooler pad and cool the ambient air by using a fan to blow the air through the pad.

The pump sits in the water in the reservoir at the bottom of the cooler and distributes water into the evaporative pads. The motor draws the hot ambient air through the wet pads and distributes the cooled air into an area.
