The two most important things to look for in a massage therapist are whether they are licensed to practice and if they have malpractice insurance. I'll give you two of the top websites in the country. One is amtamassage.org, and in that website is a listing of therapists who have been certified in massage therapy and who have malpractice insurance. The other one is abmp.com, and again it lists some people who have malpractice insurance and their certification has been reviewed. I can't just call up a company and say I would like to buy insurance. They will ask where I went to school, ask for proof, and so on.
You should also interview a massage therapist over the phone. You can tell them your particular needs and see how they respond. Every massage therapist is unique; there is no robot massage out there. I would just say that being aware of what's available out there is helpful to the client so they'll know in some way what they are looking for, whether they are just trying to relax, trying to deal with stress and tension, or trying to deal with pain. If they are trying to deal with pain, then they may want to lean towards somewhat deep tissue massage or neuromuscular therapy training. If they want to relax, they might lean towards someone who is specializes in Swedish massage. If their injury or their tenderness is from working out or from running or some type of movement like that, then they may want to look for someone who specializes in sports massage.
