Gold flatware is very uncommon nowadays. There is not too much out there as far as actual gold flatware. What is more common is gold accents on flatware, where a portion of the flatware has a gold element to it.
Gold is a soft metal, but we use a liquid gold to paint onto the Stainless Steel.
As far as the strength of gold accent flatware, you have to be a little bit more careful about putting it in a dishwasher. Overtime, the more you wash the gold it will wear. You may want to limit the amount of times you put it in the dishwasher. I would recommend hand washing just to keep the gold from fading.
In the market place, typically people are not interested in gold accents as much. Ever since the mid 90's, gold accents have not really been selling too well.
