How to Hang Roman Blinds

Roman blinds are fabric shades, which offer softness to any window and any decor. When raised, the fabric folds accordion style. When lowered, the fabric settles into loose folds. Roman blinds are available in a variety of materials from cotton to suede. The trick to hanging Roman blinds starts with measurements. Measuring your window precisely determines how well the blind will fit and determine how easily the shade will hang.

Step 1

Determine how you will mount the shades. You can have an inside mount, with the shades mounted inside the window casement. You can have an outside mount, with the shades mounted on the window frame or the wall. Make sure you have measured the inside casing or the outside area with a metal tape measure to ensure accurate measurements.

Step 2

Attach the brackets. For an inside mount, first check to see if the shade will fit correctly. Hold the head rail against the inside top casement and lower the shade. Make sure it does not rub against the casement and there is enough shade to reach the bottom of the casement.

Step 3

Mark the casement. Holding the head rail against the casement, mark where the holes are for screws. A pencil will work fine. Once you have marked the area, take a 2-inch screw and drill it into the wood. The purpose is to start a hole for easy drilling. Remove the screw. Place the head rail against the casement. Position the holes with the pencil marking And drill the screw through the head rail and into the casement.

Step 4

Attach the brackets for an outside mount. Determine whether the shades will mount on the wall or the window frame. Holding the head rail up, mark the area where the screws will go. Take a 2-inch screw and drill slightly into the wood or wall. Remove the screw. Hold the head rail up and position the holes with the wall or frame markings. Drill the screw through the hole into the window frame or wall.

Step 5

Adjust the shade. Pull on the cords to adjust and even up the shade. You may have to draw the shade up and down to even out the folds, so the shade will fold down and hang properly.
