A home theater system is media that is a visual concept (such as a television) where you play back movies or anything that you can see. The audio side includes what you hear as far as the sound system. You could have two speakers set up with the stereo, with a left and right or you can go all the way up into a 5.1 set up. That means that there are five speakers (the left and right front speakers and left and right rear speakers and a sub), and then one person sitting there listening to all five speakers. You could just buy a television and then sit and watch television. That does not mean you have a home theater, you're just watching television. Home theater is when you add something extra to the experience, especially audio, where you bring in the theater sound and the movie becomes more enhanced. You could add lights. In some home theaters everything is automated...they have automated blinds, which cut down on the lighting so that you can focus more on the television. They may have subs inside the seating to give you more of the low end sound. There are a lot of things added to it as more decor just to give it more of that "theater experience" inside of the home.
