How to Install a Home Alarm System

A wireless home alarm system can be installed relatively painlessly because of the lack of concern about dealing with wires. Installing a wireless home center is also exciting because of the high tech advantages that are offered through the transmission of signals that can be adapted to facilitate such changes as renovation and decoration.

Step 1

Decide where to place the main control panel inside your home. Ideally, this will be close to the door you use the most for entering and exiting the house. Place the control panel near and outlet that is not controlled by a wall switch and that is away from view from the outside.

Step 2

Choose the sites where you want to put the security sensors. The sensors and the control panel should be located in a centralized location to facilitate programming of the system. Next choose a spot to place the alarm siren that is relatively inconspicuous, but does not serve to muffle the sound of the alarm.

Step 3

Install the control panel on a wall and place it neither too low nor too high, but in a position and location that makes programming it comfortable. Connect the transformer wire to the control panel and then to the transformer. Install the battery backup, switch the circuit on, and plug in the transformer. Refer to the manual for instructions on how to hide the wires. A small drill may be necessary.

Step 4

Select a house code using the programming dials. This may require a tiny screwdriver to accomplish. Insert the plug into an outlet that is not controlled by a wall switch to ensure you do not accidentally turn the system off. Programming instructions vary from system to system and some systems are even equipped with a computer voice to talk you through this process of programming.

Step 5

Place the sensor's transmitter up next to door or window at the entry point and then place the sensor's magnet on the door or window itself. Make sure these elements of the sensors are aligned perfectly. Repeat this process for all sensors. Test each sensor. There should be an audible feedback as you test these sensors when you engage the testing mode on the control panel.
