How to Install a Home Security System

A home security system protects a home from intruders and keeps a family safe. Installing a home security system isn't as difficult as it might sound. Most home security system do-it-yourself kits come with complete instructions. In addition, the process of setting up the system is usually a matter of determining which areas need protecting and installing the proper device.

Step 1

Determine which unit is the main control console. This unit will have a power outlet, a phone connection and easy access to the rest of your alarm network. This is the unit that is responsible for monitoring cameras and sending signals to the security headquarters. Also determine which devices are the window and door consoles.

Step 2

Measure the distances between doors and threshold moldings. You'll need to install door sensors so that there is a clean and flush departure between the sensors. This is so the sensors can accurately determine when a door is open and closed. Install the sensors with the screws provided with your kit. Once you've placed the sensors, run the cable back to the main control unit.

Step 3

Set up the glass break sensors. They too must be clean and flush so that the sensors know when a window is open, closed or broken. Then run the cable back to the main control unit. Use wire clippers, if necessary, to give the wires enough lag to connect to the main control console.

Step 4

Install the control console in a busy entryway. Be sure to hook up power to the system before encasing it in the wall. Once completed run the cable back to the main control board.

Step 5

Test and calibrate the unit to your preference. You can set the door and window alarms to the sensitivity you like.
