How to Install Wooden Blinds

Installing wood blinds is something the average person can do a few minutes. Gather your tools and ladder, if you cannot easily reach the top of the window, and lay them out for easy access. Remove any existing hardware from previous window treatments to allow for a clean fit.

Step 1

Measure the distance from side to side of either the inside or the outside of the window sill. If you measure the inside, your blinds will be inset. If you measure the outside, your blinds will sit outside the window, covering the framework. Some people prefer the inside, as they can still hang decorative curtains over the blinds.

Step 2

Purchase the proper-size blinds based on your measurements. Get wooden blinds that are as close to your measurements or smaller, not larger, or they will not fit, if you are planning on installing them on the inside of the window. Outside window mounts have a little extra space for variation.

Step 3

Hold the top of the blind at the top of the window sill where you want to position it. Mark the underside of it with your pencil on either end and along the center where you want to mount support brackets. The window should be even, but check it with the level. Make any adjustments to the installation so that the blinds will hang straight.

Step 4

Screw the brackets on either side of the window fame, making sure they are aligned properly. The opening should be on the front. Drill small holes into the window frame if necessary. Use three to four screws for each bracket for extra strength. Install the support brackets, lining them up with the pencil marks.

Step 5

Slide the top valence of the wood blinds into the openings on either sides of the brackets, and into the support brackets in the center. Slide the face plates on the front of the side brackets. Allow the blinds to hang all the way down, and then adjust them for the proper length.
