Lip piercing information and care tips

Tips and techniques for the care and maintenance of a new lip piercing.

Lip piercing is about $50 and there is an additional consideration for preparation of this piercing. First the inside of the mouth is prepared and then the outside. There is extra preparation for the lip piercing. They are generally done from the inside of the mouth out and so the piercing artist has to be experienced. They mark the outside of the lip. They clamp the lip and then insert the piercing from the inside out. There are dangers to piercing your own lip. Without preparing the equipment mouth properly, infection could develop.

If the piercing is going to be a Marilyn Monroe or Madonna style piercing, they have a little flat back on it that lies against the gum and then the decoration is on the outside. Because it is one of the trickier piercings, we charge $60 for that.

One is down in the bottom between the chin and the lip - one is the Monroe and one is the Madonna - one is on the upper lip, where Marilyn Monroe had a mole. Madonna's is apparently on the other side.

You can tell if your lip piercing is infected because it is going to be swollen, puffy, and red and it is going to hurt. You will need to treat it by rinsing the inside of the mouth and then clean the outside properly with antibacterial ointment. If it is a stud on the piercing, you have to be very, very careful cleaning around it. If it is a ring, be sure and rotate the ring in and out. We don't have a high number of infections with lip piercings, but I have seen some.
