Needle lace is a form of embroidery using a pillow as a background.

Needle lace is a form of embroidery using a pillow as a background. You would have a pattern that you would attach to the pillow, and then you would start by tacking some heavier threads down as the outline of the pattern on top of the pattern. After that, you come in with needle and thread and fill in the pattern. There are a great many filling stitches that you could use to fill in a pattern. First you actually you go over the heavier thread that outlines the pattern in what is called a couching stitch. Let me get the terminology straight. You couch the heavy threads onto the pattern, and then you come back with a button whole stitch to go over those couching threads. Last you come back and fill in the pattern with filling stitches using a needle and thread.
