To care for a nipple piercing, the ring needs to be washed very carefully before you go to bed, when you wake up, anytime you shower, and anytime you feel the area has been compromised. Wash the ring very well. Wash any healing products and dried blood off the ring and then, once the ring is nice, clean and soapy, rotate the piercing in and out so that it can clean the canal.
If the ring is rotated inside and has dried healing products on it, it could be loaded with bacteria that could be a major cause of infection. The ring needs to be cleaned well and before it is rotated. When you come out of the shower, put a little antibacterial ointment on the ring and turn it back and forth. If you do that for several weeks while it is healing, the chances of an infection are decreased.
If one is placed properly, there is very little to worry about. If it's not placed properly and there is not enough material, it could work its way to the surface or it could be prone to being hung up and torn out.
To tell if your nipple piercing is infected, look for pain, swelling, redness and exudation. If those signs appear, it is probably infected. Washing it well using an antibacterial ointment usually will take care of that within a couple of days. If it does not, if it starts getting worse or it is obviously spreading, then it is time to seek medical attention.
