How to Open a School Locker

Learning to open a locker is a skill that most middle-school students will have to learn. It can seem tricky at first, especially under time constraints in between classes, but after a few tries opening a locker will become very easy. if you're anticipating going to school and having to open a locker for the first time, you may want to practice with these steps on a combination lock at home.

Step 1

Clear the lock by first spinning the dial clockwise a few times before you begin to enter the combination. You'll need to do this every time to reset it.

Step 2

Spin the dial toward the right until you reach the first number in your lock combination. Make sure you align the small arrow closely with the number's line on the dial.

Step 3

Turn the dial toward the left. Pass the second number in your combination once, then stop on it the second time the dial reaches it.

Step 4

Spin the dial back to the right and stop at the final number in the combination.

Step 5

Pull on the handle and the locker should open. If it doesn't, try moving the dial slightly to the right or jiggle the handle a little. Sometimes older lockers require some coaxing with a little trick to open them.

Step 6

Rule out obvious mistakes if your locker won't open after a few tries. First, check to make sure you're standing in front of the correct locker. If you are, ask a teacher for help. You may have been given the wrong combination, or you might just need to be shown how to do it. Don't be embarrassed to ask for help--learning to open a locker can take some practice.

Step 7

Memorize your combination. Make sure the paper with your combination written on it is in a safe place so that no one else can access your locker.

Skill: Easy

Tip: Locker doors occasionally get stuck, in which case you'll have to call a maintenance person or janitor for help.
